Decollecting (2008)

Annette Schemmel

'Collections are not merely owned, they are performed. A collection's history and it's display define the space between the objects. Precisely these interstitial moments are worth a second look'.

This publication is a result of the curatorial research project "decollecting", realised in the framework of the H+F Curatorial Grant/FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais in Dunkerque/F. It  covers a range of aspects on the cultural practice of collecting. The works of 15 artists, presented in full color in the abundant image part, as well as essays by curators, historians, collectors and artists explore the subject matter beyond the borders of fine arts and draw lines to anthropology and the history of collecting. Visionary knowlegde collections like the "Mundaneum" as well as passionate pursuits with an activist background, such as artist Sands Murray-Wassinks' collections of feminist art are presented here.
