The foundations of our digital world can be found beneath our earthly surfaces. We mine lithium in Chile for our batteries, cobalt from the Congo for magnets, while silicon is used to manufacture computer chips, and Indonesian tin seals our devices – holding our smartphone we literally have the world in our hands. The reality, however, is that due to these processes of large-scale mining, our planet is being disrupted, resulting in inhumane conditions, mountains of e-waste and ecological degeneration.
What Are Men to Rocks and Mountains? tries to get a grip on invisible supply chains, military gain, political conflict, and ecological devastation, all part of extractivism – the extraction of natural resources from the earth to sell them as commodities. Looking beyond its bloody and destructive history, the exhibition aims to offer alternative perspectives on extractivism, while speculating on a better relationship between mankind and its environment.
